"Around one-third of Rohingya children between the ages of 4 and 14 are missing out on education" - UNICEF USA
Context: The Rohingya are an ethnic minority that originate in the Rakhine state of Myanmar. For decades, the minority group has been discriminated against and denied citizenship. Violent attacks against the Rohingya have occurred multiple times in history, however, the most deadly and impactful incursion occurred in August of 2017 when the Myanmar army burned down villages prompting Rohingyas to flee for their lives and cross the border to Bangladesh.
On February of 2019 a Joint Response Plan was implemented by OCHA (UN office for the coordination of humanitarian affairs) to provide aid that would alleviate some of the sufferings of the Rohingya refugees. The plan pledges 920 million dollars of aid for sanitation, food, water, shelter, and medical care for the refugees and local community (which amounts to about 1.2 million people) who are affected by the crisis. As of now only 17 percent of the pledged fund has been received and much more assistance is needed to ensure welfare for the desperate population.
